How Vantrue stores recordings

Vantrue cameras (Novatek chipset) write H.264 or H.265 MP4 with GPS embedded directly inside the video file as freeGPS blocks — no separate log file. On most models the GPS payload is NMEA-style text inside that block. dashcamigo scans the file for the freeGPS structure, reads the route and renders it on the map automatically — drop the whole SD-card folder and the trip appears.

FAQ

Which Vantrue models work in dashcamigo?

Vantrue cameras that embed GPS as Novatek freeGPS blocks work out of the box: N1 Pro, N2 Pro, N2X, N4, N5 / N5 Pro, E1, E3, E330, S1 / S1 Pro, X4S, Sonnet 3 and others. Models without the GPS module, or with the GPS antenna unplugged, still play — just without a route on the map.

Do I need the Vantrue Cam app or a desktop viewer?

No. dashcamigo plays Vantrue recordings without any Vantrue software or account. Plug the SD card into your computer, drop the folder onto dashcamigo.app — trips appear with map and chart in seconds. The Vantrue Cam app is for Wi-Fi access from a phone; for SD-card files on a PC or Mac, dashcamigo is a free alternative.

Will my Vantrue recordings be uploaded?

No. There is no backend. The browser reads files locally with the File System Access API and decodes them with WebCodecs. Nothing leaves your device.

Does dashcamigo handle dual- and three-channel Vantrue cameras (N4, N5, Sonnet 3)?

Yes. Vantrue multi-channel models write a front, rear and (on three-channel models) cabin file for the same moment. dashcamigo groups them into one trip and plays all channels in sync. Click any channel to make it the main view, or keep them side by side.

Can I trim and export a clip from a Vantrue recording?

Yes. Drag a range on the speed chart, click Export, and dashcamigo writes an MP4 with the GPS track embedded as GPMF metadata. The original H.264/H.265 video is stream-copied (no re-encoding) when possible, so export is fast and quality-lossless. You can also burn speed, coordinates and a mini-map onto the frame, or export the route as a separate .gpx.
